What is this course about?
This versatile one-year course offers students the opportunity to expand on the skills introduced at secondary school and experiment with a new materials, methods and processes.
The course is designed for students to explore, develop and test their creativity; over time students will develop their individual creative voices, experiencing various pathways including drawing, painting, digital media, sculpture, printmaking and textiles.
Students will gain transferable skills including the ability to communicate thoughts and ideas, resilience, collaboration, problem solving and creative thinking.In addition to studio-based work, you will have the opportunity to visit galleries and locations of interest during the course which will inspire creativity and introduce you to different career opportunities within the fields of art and design.

What will I study?
You will study a range of art & design techniques, including 2D, 3D, animation and experience working with a variety of materials. You will regularly assess your work and conduct research in to different artists and designers. At the end of the year, you will have the chance to plan your own project which will feature in the Creative and Performing Arts End of Year Show. These skills will enable you to progress on to Level 3 study confidently.
Entry requirements:
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 9 – 3 including a Grade 3 in English Language, a Grade 3 in Maths and a grade 9 – 3 in an Art and Design related subject.
All students applying for an Art and Design course will be expected to show a portfolio of work at interview and attend a new student taster day to experience the department and creative expectations.
How will I be assessed?
Each project will allow you to develop your practical and analytical skills. Each project will be assessed individually with feedback provided to help you with progress throughout the year. Assessment will take the form of regular verbal and written feedback, as well as self and peer assessment.
What will this course lead on to?
Successful completion of this course will enable students to progress to one of the Cronton School of Art Level 3 Extended Diploma Art & Design pathways, which include Fashion, Graphic Design and General Art and Design.
Are there any costs associated with this course?
You will be expected to provide some of your own art materials and some equipment. Visits to Museums, Galleries, and Exhibitions may involve a charge.
