Level : 3 | Duration: 2 Years | Details: September | Exam Board: OCR
Please note all of our A Level courses must be studied as part of a full time A Level programme. You will choose 3 A level subjects to study over two years.
What is this course about?
You will study a full range of topics from Inorganic Physical and Organic branches of Chemistry. You will undertake frequent practical activities and also work extensively with ICT, model building, problem solving and working with others. You will use reasonable mathematical skills and develop your skills in observing analysing and evaluating evidence from your own experimental findings. At Cronton Sixth Form we have modern labs and students complete practical experiments every two weeks.
Why choose this course?
You will study in the newly refurbished suite of teaching laboratories at the Mond Centre of Excellence for Science and Maths. The chemistry laboratories are fully refitted and have a range of new and sophisticated equipment. A team of highly experienced teachers have been recruited. All have held senior teaching posts in nationally recognized Beacon Colleges. They bring a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to lessons, and have the clear aim to be outstanding in all we do.
Entry requirements:
A minimum of 3 x 5’s and 2 x 4’s at GCSE including a Grade 5 in English Language and a Grade 5 in Maths. Plus a Grade 6 in Chemistry or a Grade 6 in Trilogy Science.
What will this course lead to?
Chemistry is the essential science for all careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, and related biomedical sciences courses and careers. Chemistry is also a vital subject for forensic science, biological, biochemical, and health-related science careers. All chemical, material and physical sciences and engineering.
What will I learn on this course?
You will learn the importance of Chemistry in the production of resources, energy, and new materials. You will look at the contributions of chemistry to medicine and its impact on our environment. You will explore the fascinating world of atoms and molecules and how they interact to make useful substances including polymers, medicines, and metals.
Enrichment Opportunities
A Level Chemistry students take part in regional Competitions held at local universities. We are also establishing links to other local chemical and industrial companies to jointly develop curriculum resources and teaching materials. Our students make visits to University departments and explore the frontiers and latest developments in Chemistry, technology and analysis. All Science students are invited to take part in our prestigious Science and Medical Club working with fellow students in small groups researching and presenting their findings in a celebratory evening of academic discovery and interaction.
How will I be assessed?
At the end of Year 1 there will be an internal progression examination. This will test knowledge and understanding of concepts and principles of organic inorganic and physical chemistry and their practical applications. For A level, there will be three externally assessed written exams covering the whole of the two year course and practical skills. A Level Chemistry students must undertake a minimum of 12 recommended practical exercises over the two years. Students will assessed on the ability to successfully complete these practical activities.
Are there any costs associated with this course? There is a one-off payment of £25 at the start of the year which covers the cost of lab coat, all subject trips, and course resources.
Facilities
Two brand new state-of-the-art laboratories with specialised equipment for practical work in organic and physical chemistry spectroscopy, photometry, chromatography and analysis.
