Sweeney Todd Wreaks Vengeance at the Cronton Playhouse
The Centre of Excellence for Performing Arts at Cronton Sixth Form delivered two exceptional performances to packed-out audiences at the Cronton Playhouse theatre with their latest production, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Hugh Wheeler’s Sweeney Todd is a grisly musical thriller set in 1840s Victorian England which tells the story of a murderous barber who exacts vengeance on the unsuspecting people of London for the cruel abuse of his wife by Judge Turpin.
Over two exciting nights, the Centre of Excellence performed their terrific production, which stared talented students Jack Wright (previous pupil from St Gregory’s Catholic High School) as Sweeney Todd, Emily McDonnell (previous pupil from Lord Derby Academy) as Mrs Lovett, Lucy English (previous pupil from Saints Peter and Paul Catholic High School) as Johanna and Mqhele Simango Wright (previous pupil from St Gregory’s Catholic High School) as Judge Turpin.
Matt Plant, Creative Director of the Centre of Excellence for Performing Arts, said, “This was our first production of Sweeney Todd in our new Playhouse, and it was certainly worth the wait. The students worked so hard to achieve an industry standard performance that has received some of our best reviews to date. An exceptional way to end the year and a fitting tribute to the excellent students that now begin their new journey at universities throughout the country.”
The Centre of Excellence’s next show, ‘9 to 5 The Musical’, will be at the Cronton Playhouse Theatre on Wednesday 30th November and Thursday 1st December from 7.30pm. Tickets cost £8.00 and are available to purchase at: https://www.cronton.ac.uk/shows/
