BAFTA Award-winning Writer Inspires Students at Cronton Sixth Form

The Centre of Excellence for Performing Arts students at Cronton Sixth Form had eagerly anticipated the arrival of Phil Mealey, the BAFTA Award-winning writer of The Royle Family for Aspire Week. As soon as they heard he would be visiting, they knew this was an opportunity not to be missed.

Phil delivered an outstanding workshop explaining the basics of scriptwriting, emphasising the importance of character development, plot structure, and dialogue. The students listened intently, taking notes and asking questions as Phil spoke.

He went on to discuss his career and shared some behind-the-scenes stories from The Royle Family, much to the delight of the students.

Towards the end of the workshop, Phil tasked the students to create a three-page sitcom, which they would act out at the end of the session. He provided personalised feedback to each group on their writing projects. He was impressed by their talent and encouraged them to keep writing and pursuing their dreams.

Overall, it was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. The students left feeling inspired and empowered, knowing they had learned from one of the best in the business.

Not only did students get to meet a BAFTA winning writer, but they were also able to create the beginnings of a sitcom. This is a day we will never forget.”
