Eye-Catching Murals to be Unveiled at Albert Square Shopping Centre

Level 2 School of Art students at Cronton Sixth Form College recently took part in the creation of large scale murals to surround a new building development in Widnes Town Centre.

The design brief, devised by the Art & Design students, set out to raise awareness of the diverse range of influential and celebrated people who are connected with the Borough of Halton. The murals also aim to present local young people with inspiring role models with very different backgrounds from the past and present.
By taking part in the Albert Square Mural project and working alongside Natalie McGahan (a local artist and specialist in community murals) the students have developed a deeper understanding of the demands of working as professional artist.
In a recent interview with Sue Ellison of Halton Community Radio, Mark Smith (Level 2 Art & Design tutor) commented “Forming new links with partners in the local community is a real priority for us at Cronton Sixth Form College. Naturally we warmly welcomed this great opportunity to work with new local partners, to create an exciting community-focussed artwork.”
“I can see that overall, the students have really enjoyed the process of creating the mural. Although the planning and design stages were very rigorous and tightly brief focussed, the process of painting the final work was definitely fun. I can see that the students became really excited as they watched their ideas take shape on such a large and impressive scale.”
The murals will be officially unveiled by the Mayor of Halton, Councillor Margaret Ratcliffe, on the 9th April 2014 at 12.00pm. BBC Merseyside and Halton Community Radio have expressed their interest in the event and will be in attendance on the day, alongside several Halton Borough Council officials. Albert Square will also host an exhibition displaying the design work and photographs of the mural painting in progress, all members of the public are welcome to attend.
