Talented science students present their work at the University of Liverpool

Four gifted students from the Centre of Excellence in Science and Maths at Cronton Sixth Form, who each completed a research placement as part of the prestigious Nuffield Research Project Scheme, have now impressed visitors at the University of Liverpool when they presented their findings at a presentation evening for the scheme.
Laith Alshukri, Amber Turton, James Greer and Michael Cook all originally spent an amazing four weeks of the summer break completing the research projects at the University of Liverpool alongside professional scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians.

The students from the Centre of Excellence in Science and Maths at Cronton were selected to take part in the highly competitive national programme which aims to provide the students with extra skills and confidence to help them with their applications to the top universities. The Cronton students spent their time working on intense projects including ‘Mathematical and Group Theory’ and ‘Uveal Melanoma Tumours’.
The students were all recently invited to a Nuffield Celebration Event at the University of Liverpool, were they had the opportunity to display what they achieved during their placement and discuss their finding with other students, supervisors and guests from the science, technology and engineering sector.
James Greer, previously from Wade Deacon High School completed his project at the Surface Science Research Centre at the University of Liverpool. He said, “During my time at the centre I had the opportunity to operate specialist equipment in a specialist research environment, the experience made me realise that I would like to pursue a career in research.”
