Geography Students Explore Formby Beach Sand Dunes
AS Geography students at Cronton Sixth Form College had the opportunity to experience hands-on fieldwork investigation during a trip to Formby Beach sand dunes.
Using scientific analysis equipment, the students focused on changes to physical factors along a sand dune transect; such as the number of plants, types of plant, and temperature.
Following the practical trip, the students will write up their results and findings in a project which will make up 20% of their final grade.
Dan Adams, Head of Humanities, English and Modern Foreign Languages at the College, said “The Geographers were brilliant on the day. They loved climbing over the sand dunes and collecting data using scientific equipment in the field, rather than simply in a classroom setting. Many of the students were already spotting patterns within the 20 sample sites and bringing the theory from classroom lessons and reality together.
“We will be going to Manchester after Christmas to investigate the success of regeneration and the development of ‘The Northern Powerhouse.’ Some of the students will also be going on a Humanities trip to New York at Easter which is extremely exciting.”
