Roberto Martinez is special guest at Halton Primary School Games 2013 hosted by Cronton Sixth Form College

The annual Halton Primary School games were held this year at Cronton Sixth Form College.  The schools participating included, St Bedes Junior School, The Holy Spirit School, Gorsewood Primary School, Woodside Primary School, St Basil’s Primary School, Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, and St John Fisher Primary School.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Halton, and Kemik the Viking welcomed all of the children on arrival and then the children were able to take part in lots of different sporting activities including fencing, football and archery.
At the closing ceremony, special guest, Wigan FC Manager Roberto Martinez presented the children with a certificate of participation, each school year group a trophy and each school received the Wenlock London 2012 mascot to take back to their schools.
Ben Barton, Head of the Centre of Excellence in Sport at Cronton Sixth Form College said, “The day was an outstanding success, all of the Primary schools showed amazing energy and commitment over the day, especially in the heat, and it was a pleasure to see so many smiles during the activities. The feedback we’ve had about our student leaders, staff and the organisation of the event from teachers, pupils and parents has been outstanding and based on this we’ve had several requests to go into schools and deliver weekly sports sessions. Special thanks must go to our students and sports tutors Ste Buckley and Adam Rudd who organised the event and the rest of the Centre of Excellence staff who helped to support the event on the day. It was a pleasure to see so many youngsters enjoy playing sport”

In light of the exciting build up to the Olympics and Paralympics it was vital that the enthusiasm engaged by our schools and pupils was continued long after London 2012. The aim was to create a lasting legacy for school sport through the delivery of an inter school multi-sport concept which will form an annual Halton School Games event.
The Sainsbury’s School Games is the Government’s approach to competitive school sport, designed to motivate and enthuse all young people. Using the unique power and energy of London 2012 now is the time to inspire everyone to take part. The Halton School Games aims to engage local primary schools and provide them with the opportunity for their Year 2  & Year 4 pupils to experience a multi-sport festival.
Following the visit of the London 2012 Torch Relay that passed through Halton on 31^st May 2012 this event would provide a lasting legacy to such a special day.
The event was delivered in partnership with Cronton Sixth Form College and Halton School Games Organiser. The college Sports Students and Wade Deacon Sports Leaders delivered a variety of different sessions which including sports such as fencing, archery, orienteering, goalball, ultimate Frisbee, parachute games, netball, handball, tug of war, tag rugby and tennis. All pupils had the opportunity to try all the sports.
