Please note all of our A Level subjects must be studied as part of a full time A Level programme. You will choose 3 A level subjects to study over two years.
What is this course about?
Throughout A Level Film Studies you will study Film and Cinema as a medium; as an art form; and as a social and economic institution. You will engage with a wide range of different types of films developing your skills of observation, critical analysis and personal reflection through both written film analysis and film production skills. Over the 2 years you will complete a production coursework piece which may be in the form of a script, storyboard or short film. You will also study modules in British and American Film, considering both contemporary and historical elements of these as well as studying the differences between mainstream and independent film. You will also study a module in varieties of film experience considering things such as documentary film, European film and short film, both these modules will be assessed by examination.

You will produce coursework on both Apple Mac and PC platforms allowing the development of a wide skills base on both major computer platforms and providing you with industry standard skills.
Entry requirements:
A minimum of 3 x Grade 5’s and 2 x Grade 4’s at GCSE including a Grade 5 in English Language, a Grade 5 in Maths and a Grade 5 in another written subject.
What will this course lead on to?
The A Level Film Studies course allows progression to Higher Education courses in Film, Media and Visual Culture and also develops a range of transferable critical, analytical and research skills which you will be able to use effectively in future employment.
Enrichment Opportunities:
As part of the course we undertake a number of exciting trips and visits to enrich and support your studies. We visit the York Aesthetica international Film Festival, the Manchester Imax theatre, Fact cinema and the Warner Bros studios Harry Potter experience in London. There are also lots of other opportunities that you may wish to join in with including Film club in which you will watch and debate a number of interesting films

This component assesses one production and its evaluative analysis. Learners produce:
Either a short film (4-5 minutes) or a screenplay for a short film (1600-1800 words) and a digitally photographed storyboard of a key section from the screenplay and an evaluative analysis (1250-1500 words).

You will be expected to buy digital memory SD cards, and pay transport and entry fees for visits.
