From Cronton to Harvard
Students at Cronton Sixth Form College are hoping to experience life at universities in the United States, after being selected to apply for the prestigious Sutton Trust US Programme 2015.
The highly competitive programme is aimed at high achieving students and involves a one week placement at a renowned United States university. Students can experience the US higher education system and American culture at various universities; previous years have seen placements at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University and Harvard.
Amongst the students hoping to be accepted this year is Michael Cooke. Michael is currently studying A-level Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths at the College and is predicted to achieve A grades.
A previous student at Halewood Academy, Michael hopes to one day study a medical degree at university and progress to a career in medicine, ultimately becoming a surgeon. He said “I have dreamed of living in the USA for a very long time, the opportunity to study there is something I am extremely excited about. I hope the experience will give me a great insight into university life.”
Emma Humphries, formerly of Wade Deacon High School, is another Cronton student applying for the scheme. Emma currently studies A levels in History, French, English Literature, and Government and Politics at the College and is on course for A grades.
Emma commented, “I applied for the scheme as I have a desire to travel and am interested in the idea of studying abroad. I would consider studying a degree in the US as they offer extra years of broad study, which is great for me as I am unsure of the degree I want to do. The scheme will also be a great way to enhance my UCAS application when applying at university.”
Dr Luke McMahon, History Lecturer at Cronton Sixth Form said, “I am really pleased for the students applying for the scheme this year. Should they be successful, this will be an inspirational experience which will help them to make important decisions when deciding on universities to apply for in the future. I wish them the best of luck in their applications.”
