Cronton Rugby Academy stars on Sky Sports!

Camera crew and presenters from Sky Sports recently went on location at Cronton Sixth Form College to film the college’s Rugby Academy.
Presenters from the programme ‘Boots n All’, Angela Powers and Terry O’Connor filmed the students in class and interviewed former Wigan, Warrington and Ireland star Liam Bretherton. Liam who leads the College Rugby Academy, which provides students with skills, that will enable them to be successful after education as a player.

Liam’s playing career started in 1994 playing for Warrington Wolves, this followed a move to Wigan Warriors in 1998 were he scored two tries. Whilst at Wigan, Liam also played for the Ireland International team in the Lincoln Traingular Tournament and the 2000 World Cup.
Whilst on loan from Wigan Warriors, Liam played for Leigh Centurions, who came Grand Final runners up in 2000 and also won the Minor Premiership in 2001 and 2002, and the Arriva Trains Cup in the same year.
Liam, who had his own career cut short by injury said; “I was lucky enough to play professional rugby at Super League and international level, I will always have that experience and if I can give these students some of the experiences I had and they can learn from them and use them to their benefit, then that’s great for me.”
Throughout his playing career Liam gained a BSC Honors Degree in Sports Science followed by a PGCE in Further Education. When his career came to an end due to injury in 2004, Liam became the Head of Strength and Conditioning at Leigh Centurions. He then went on to be the Under 18s Assistant Coach at Wigan Warriors before becoming Irelands International Strength and Conditioning coach in 2006. Liam has been at Riverside College since 2008 and is now studying for a MSc in Exercise and Nutrition.
Many players take on another career once their playing days come to an end, therefore it is important for players to get an education. Which is where the Rugby Academy comes in giving budding players the opportunity to train whilst gaining nationally a recognised qualifications which can lead directly to University.
